Primm, 43 miles south of Las Vegas on I-15, is a curious byproduct of the California-Nevada state line. It is a cluster of three large casino hotels, all operated under the same ownership, an outlet mall, two gas stations, a McDonald’s, and a 100-store factory outlet mall on the Nevada side of the line and a small convenience store selling lottery tickets on the California side. Free transportation between the resorts is provided by Monorail or shuttle bus.

Take a cue from the attractions and book your room accordingly. At Whiskey Pete’s you can see Bonnie & Clyde’s bullet-riddled car and the blood-stained shirt Clyde was wearing when they were ambushed by the FBI on May 23, 1934. At Buffalo Bill’s across the freeway you can ride the tallest roller coaster in the world, and at the Primm Valley next door you can ride on a 100-foot high ferris wheel.
Also on display at Whiskey Pete’s is the restored bullet-proof 1931 Lincoln custom built for gangster Dutch Schultz. “The Bronx Beer Baron,” as he was known, was a New York bootlegger and violent gangster during the 1920s and 30s, earning an estimated $20 million per year during the Depression. There was an actual Whiskey Pete who operated a gas station here back in the Dark Ages when the highway was two lanes. He also peddled the whiskey he made in a nearby cave, and kept a sharp eye on the cars passing by. According to legend he is buried standing up where he can watch the road.
Buffalo Bill’s has one of the world’s tallest and fastest roller coasters, the “Desperado.” Other amusements include the 5-6 minute Adventure Canyon Water Flume Logride, the 170-foot-high Turbo Drop, first run movies, and a Buffalo-shaped swimming pool with a spiraling water slide and an outdoor spa. Oh, and 1,833 slot machines.
At the 660-room Primm Valley Resort & Casino the theme is golf. When a second championship golf course was added a few years ago, the casino, conference area and all of the public areas including the bars, restaurants and buffet were renovated with a golf theme. Primm Valley also has 250 RV hook-ups and a 100-foot high Ferris wheel. This brightly-lighted artifact can be seen for miles through the dark desert night. A western-style train travels between Whiskey Pete’s and the Primm Valley Resort.
